EFFECT OF CENSUS ON STATE ASSEMBLY SEATS

Share

Based on 1990 Census figures, Los Angeles County is likely to lose as many as two seats in the 80-member Assembly as part of the reapportionment of state legislative districts. Currently, the county is represented by all or part of 28 Assembly districts. In a pattern similar to that for state Senate seats, the boundaries of many county Assembly districts are expected to be shifted east and south, pulled by population increases in fast-growing inland areas. The boundaries must be redrawn so that each Assembly district represents 372,000 people. The amount a district is above or below that number could determine how dramatically it is redrawn. The following chart, based on legislative estimates, shows how current Assembly districts encompassing all or part of the Southeast Los Angeles County area compare to the 372,000 figure.
