WATER WATCH

Share
Researched by: KATHIE BOZANICH / Los Angeles Times

The following is a list of conservation measures cities have enacted or are considering. “Restricted” means watering is not allowed during daytime hours and, in most cases, only every other day, based on odd/even dates corresponding with odd/even addresses.

There are some exceptions to the restrictions and prohibitions. For example, lawn watering is allowed if a hand-held hose with a shut-off nozzle, a bucket or drip-irrigation system is used. Fountains can be operated if its system uses recycled water and water can be served in restaurants if a customer requests it.

A (*) denotes the restriction is already enacted and a (?) indicates that the city council is considering it at its upcoming meeting. All phone numbers are (714) area code unless noted.

Residential Water Use

According to 1990 surveys by the Metropolitan Water Districts of Orange County and Southern California, residential water use in Orange County is a little different than it is in the six-county metropolitan region. We use about 35% more water outside than do residents of the region as a whole--nearly half of our home water goes outside, into gardens, lawns, etc. We use less in our kitchens and laundry. Here’s the comparison:
