L.A. Judo Club Member Wins National Title

Richard Rose, a member of the Gardena-based L.A. Judo club, qualified to compete in the Olympic trials April 6 by winning his weight class at the 1991 United States Judo Championships at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Previously, Rose has won titles at the Junior Pan-American Games, Canadian Open and U.S. Invitational Youth Tournament.

The 143-pound Rose is a freshman at USC.

A girls’ soccer team from Central Torrance was awarded the silver medal at the American Youth Soccer Organization Trisectional Tournament April 6 in Garden Grove.

The Heartbreakers, composed of girls age 10 and 11, defeated Agoura in the semifinals, but lost to Lakewood in the championship game.

The Heartbreakers earned the right to compete in the trisectional by winning the gold medal in the sectional tournament in Redlands March 16. The sectional tournament featured teams from Los Angeles, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

The trisectional tournament, the final leg of competition in California, matches the top four teams from San Diego to Fresno. A similar event is held in Northern California.

The Heartbreakers were coached by Hal Pope and Diana Williams. Team members were Lindsey Delaney, Cindy DeMott, Stephanie Frank, Danielle Graham, Andrea Hazboun, Elizabeth Keltz, Kelly Kutasy, Kimberly Latina, Christina Mohr, Kimberly Pope, Nicole Sillers and Nicole Williams.

The team of Karolyn Kirby and Angela Rock defeated Lori Kotas and Gail Castro to win the Austin Open, the first stop on the 1990 Women’s Pro Beach Volleyball Tour.

Kotas-Castro led the winner’s bracket after defeating Kirby-Rock, 15-12. Kirby-Rock then beat challengers Lisa Strand and her twin sister Kelly Van Winden, 15-7, in the final of the loser’s bracket.

In the championship, Kirby-Rock beat Kotas-Castro, 15-12, then won the sudden death match, 7-2.

Kirby-Rock won $9,600, Kotas-Castro $7,200 and Strand-Van Winden $5,200. The tour is in Daytona, Fla., this week and Clearwater, Fla., next week.

Eight girls have been presented Palos Verdes Peninsula Girls Softball League Achievement Awards for their academic and athletic achievements.

The annual awards honor two seniors from each of the four Palos Verdes Peninsula high schools. The winners are Lisa Parsons and Jenny Van Wie (Miraleste), Natalie McDowell and Dawn Conant (Rolling Hills), Brett Harman and Andrea Ummel (Chadwick) and Ashley Allen and Kristin Jaconi (Palos Verdes).

The San Pedro Peninsula YMCA is offering a class for potential lifeguards. Sessions run three hours each Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday beginning April 23. The cost is $40. The Santa Monica Gymnastics Center plays host to a preliminary girls state qualifying meet today. The event is recognized by the United States Gymnastics Federation.
