Libraries Will Host Well-Known Readers

Politicians, judges, a banker, a firefighter and other local stars get a chance to shine Wednesday, when they read to children at area libraries.

The “Day of a Thousand Stars” will mark National Library Week and the 75th anniversary of the Ventura County Library Services Agency.

“If children can see people they know and respect reading, they will take it more seriously,” said Trish Cavanaugh, library spokeswoman.

Two or three readers are scheduled 15 minutes apart, after school or in the evening at participating county libraries in Ventura, Camarillo, El Rio, Fillmore, Agoura, Port Hueneme and Simi Valley.

Locations and a schedule of readers are available from the libraries.

Dist. Atty. Michael D. Bradbury plans to read “Dumbo.” Camarillo Mayor David Smith has chosen “Sock Snatchers,” and Superior Court Judge Joe Hadden will read a chapter from “Treasure Island.”

Radio announcer Charlie Coates will read “The Velveteen Rabbit,” and school counselor Ruth Ann McAllister will read “Pokey Little Puppy” in Spanish.

Children who attend the readings will receive plastic book bags and bookmarks.

Bibliographies of the books read will be available, Cavanaugh said.
