Jimmie Reese, the Angels’ 86-year-old conditioning coach, was unable to return to work Monday. Reese is resting at home after being hospitalized for treatment of phlebitis in his left leg.

Pitcher Bert Blyleven is scheduled for arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder today. Team orthopedist Lewis Yocum left open the possibility of performing a more extensive operation if needed. Blyleven had surgery on his shoulder last October.

Because of a change in disabled list rules this season, Bob McClure was eligible to be activated six days into the season and not 10, as General Manager Mike Port had believed and had told reporters. McClure (sore left shoulder) isn’t yet ready to pitch.
