One man was shot to death and three others were wounded during an apparent burglary early Tuesday morning at a Golden Hill duplex, police said.

The dead man’s identity was not available, but police believe he lived in the duplex in the 800 block of North 27th Street, said Lt. Gary Learn of the homicide division.

The three wounded men were found a short distance away and were taken by ambulance to hospitals, he said.

They were identified as Jose Bonilla, 23; Jose Moran, 23, and Jose Salas, 27. All gave the North 27th Street address as their home, Learn said, adding that their injuries were not life-threatening.

The shooting occurred about 1:45 a.m., Learn said. A next-door neighbor who heard the gunfire went looking for a pay phone to call police and on the way encountered patrol officers and told them about the shots. Officers found the dead man in the living room.

Meanwhile, other officers found the three bleeding men at the 28th Street underpass at California 94, Learn said. One of the men had a gunshot in the upper body, and the others had superficial wounds.

Police Department spokesman Bill Robinson said a preliminary investigation indicated that all four were shot during a burglary at the duplex, and that the three wounded residents fled on foot.

One of the victims told police that two men broke into the house and opened fire when they couldn’t find any money, Robinson said.
