Junk Sinks, 3 Boats Damaged in Marina
A Chinese-style junk named the Connie Chung sank, three other yachts suffered damage and 60 feet of dock was demolished in a major boating accident Wednesday in Marina del Rey.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Rick Blevins said the damage occurred when a mechanical failure caused the 150-foot charter boat Regentsea to get stuck in reverse as it was backing down a channel.
The Regentsea rammed the junk, destroyed four boat slips and reduced the dock to twisted blocks of concrete, wood and foam insulation. Two sailboats suffered major damage and a power boat sustained minor damage from the “crushing weight of the Regentsea,” Blevins said. There were no injuries in the late morning accident. Blevins said the dollar amount of damages had not been determined.
