REMAKING ASSEMBLY DISTRICTS

Share

Based on 1990 Census figures, Los Angeles County is likely to lose as many as two seats in the 80-member state Assembly as part of the reapportionment of legislative districts. Currently, the county is represented by all or part of 28 Assembly seats. In a pattern similar to that for state Senate seats, the boundaries of coastal Assembly districts are expected to be shifted east and south, pulled by population increases in fast-growing inland areas. New Assembly districts must be redrawn to each represent 372,000 people. How much a district’s population differs from that number could determine how dramatically it is redrawn. The following chart, based on legislative figures, shows how current Assembly districts stack up.

Above or below District Representative population of 372,000 43 Terry Friedman (D-Los Angeles) -70,729 44 Tom Hayden (D-Santa Monica) -64,763 45 Burt Margolin (D-Los Angeles) -43,120 46 open* +1,335 49 Gwen Moore (D-Los Angeles) -52,380
