A 42-year-old Irvine woman was struck and killed early Friday morning as she was trying to cross the Santa Ana Freeway, the California Highway Patrol said.

CHP Officer Angel Johnson said the woman was crossing the southbound lanes of the freeway near The City Drive overpass about 12:50 a.m. when she was hit by a car and thrown into an adjacent lane.

The victim, whose name was withheld pending notification of her relatives, was then struck by several vehicles in succession, including big-rig trucks, Johnson said.

The southbound lanes were temporarily closed as officers investigated the accident.

“We have no idea why she was crossing the highway,” Johnson said. “Maybe she was trying to take a shortcut home, we just don’t know.”

Johnson said that while no identification was found at the scene, officers were able to identify the victim through fingerprints.

The driver of the first car to hit the woman stopped but was not cited because the accident appeared unavoidable, Johnson said.
