BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : McClure Activated, Young Sent Down
Left-hander Bob McClure was activated off the disabled list after Friday night’s game, and Cliff Young was optioned to Edmonton to keep the roster at 25. McClure had been idled by a torn muscle in his pitching shoulder.
“It feels real good. Now all I have to do is get someone out,” McClure said. “The easy part is over.”
McClure is also close to becoming a published author. His book, “Rotting, the Craze of the ‘90s,” is scheduled to go to press next week.
Shortstop Dick Schofield (strained right groin muscle) missed his second successive game. He is listed as day to day. . . . Conditioning coach Jimmie Reese, hospitalized because of phlebitis earlier this month, is well enough to visit Anaheim Stadium but not to hit fungoes. Reese, 86, might resume his duties on the next home stand.
Jack Howell started in right field in place of Dave Winfield, who is hampered by a strained right hamstring. Winfield hasn’t started the last four games. He took batting practice Friday and said he felt better.
