CESAR PELLI: Buildings and Projects 1965-1990, introduction by Paul Goldberger (Rizzoli: $35).

Arguably the greatest colorist in contemporary architecture, Argentine-born Cesar Pelli bridges modern and postmodern design in his work. The Pacific Design Center (which the late Art Seidenbaum dubbed “the Blue Whale”) comes as close as any building to being the landmark structure of this unfocused city, even though its third, red component has yet to be built; the geometric towers and gardens of the World Financial Center and Plaza in New York help humanize the overscaled towers of the World Trade Center. This anthology of sketches, models and on-site photographs includes the designs for what will become the world’s tallest building: the 2,000-foot Miglin-Beitler Tower in Chicago.
