Banquet Will Salute Adult Education
The Adult Education Division of the Alhambra School District will celebrate its 75th anniversary at a banquet at 6:30 p.m. May 10 at Almansor Court, 700 S. Almansor St. Los Angeles Times columnist Jack Smith will speak.
Adult education began unofficially in 1911 with a class in physical fitness for two students and officially in 1916 with 150 students, who studied penmanship and millinery.
During World War II, students were trained for such jobs as welding and shipfitting. Currently the 20,000 students in the division are offered courses including citizenship, English as a second language, parenting skills and vocational programs.
Tickets for the banquet, at $25 each, may be obtained by phoning (818) 308-2309.
