The article “Into the Valley of Sleaze,” by John Johnson, was prejudicial and unfair. The title alone indicates a denigratory attitude toward the erotic-film industry and portrays the men making their living in this profession to be domineering monsters and the women to be brainless, maladjusted rejects of society. This is not so. Mark Curtis’ attitudes do not represent the general attitudes of the industry.

As for the implication that actresses such as Megan Leigh and Colleen Applegate took their lives as the result of their profession: This applies to any profession--stockbrokers careened to their deaths during the Depression. The people in this industry are no different than you and I--they have families to feed and bills to pay. The way they choose to do this is under constant attack by everyone who believes that eliminating adult films will cure the world’s ills. Their energies would be better expended attempting to rid the world of famine, war and disease.
