COUNTYWIDE : $23,982 Raised for Employees in Gulf
Ventura County government employees have raised $23,982 for needy families of co-workers called to active duty in the Persian Gulf War.
The employees raised the money by voluntarily contributing their vacation and leave benefits, which were converted to money and placed in the special Persian Gulf Emergency Fund.
Spearheaded by Supervisor Vicky Howard, the fund was established to help the families of more than 20 employees called to the Gulf War.
Howard said some employees designated which co-worker they wanted their contribution to benefit and those funds already have been distributed. So far, about $3,000 has been handed out, said Sylvia Schnopp, spokeswoman for the United Way of Ventura County, which is helping the county coordinate the distribution of money.
