IRVINE : Hopi Speaker to Give Talk at UCI

Share

Marilyn Harris, a Hopi from northern Arizona, will speak at UC Irvine today about pending federal legislation that she contends will allow unbridled mining of mineral resources on sacred American Indian lands.

Harris, a member of the Second Mesa Hopi reservation, will talk about the legislation at 7 p.m. in the Science Lecture Hall on campus. The talk is free and open to the public.

Harris is a spokeswoman for the traditional religious leaders of her village, Mischongnovi. The religious leaders oppose the position of the ruling tribal council on development of American Indian lands, as well as federal legislation known as the Indian Economic Development Act of 1991.
