Panel Urges Council to Reject Bradley Nominee

In a display of anger over the treatment of Police Chief Daryl F. Gates, a Los Angeles City Council committee refused on Wednesday to approve Mayor Tom Bradley’s latest appointment to the Civil Service Commission, which ultimately could decide the chief’s fate.

Last month, Bradley removed attorney Claire Bronowski from the commission and named attorney Larry Drasin to replace her in a move that some council members viewed as an attempt to pack the commission with anti-Gates votes.

“This is a political manipulation and we’ve got to respond in a political fashion,” said Councilwoman Joy Picus, who chairs the Labor Relations and Human Resources Committee. In a 2-0 vote, the committee sent the matter to the full council with a recommendation that the nomination be turned down. However, Picus predicted that the council will confirm the appointment.
