Region : Library-Fine Crackdown
The Los Angeles County Public Library System is cracking down on patrons with overdue materials.
The county will now use a private collection agency to contact patrons with outstanding fines and materials. Libraries in Culver City, Marina del Rey and West Hollywood will be affected.
“The replacement of unreturned materials is seriously jeopardizing our ability to build a strong collection for our customers,” said Sandra Reuben, a county librarian. “We hope that patrons holding materials will be encouraged to return them.”
County libraries lose nearly $1.5 million in books and materials annually, officials said. They noted that similar efforts in other library systems have helped improve return rates.
