The City Council has approved an $18,000 Fourth of July celebration, complete with a live band and fireworks, dedicated to the nation’s armed forces.

The free program, which will include food booths and music by the Nicholson Pipes and Drums, was unanimously approved at Tuesday night’s council meeting. It will be the city’s second such celebration in 10 years.

Mayor Charles V. Smith said Wednesday that the celebration’s theme--”Westminster, Proud to Be Americans”--was “exemplified by the performance of our troops in the Gulf situation. It’s a combined dedication to them . . . to let them know that we’re proud for what they did for the country.”
