Supervisor to Set Up Scholarship
Ventura County Supervisor Vicky Howard said Friday that she will donate $10,000 of her own money to establish a scholarship fund for graduating high school seniors who have performed community service work.
Howard said she will donate the money over the next four years to establish the scholarship fund, which she hopes will encourage more young people to serve the community.
Graduating high school students in Howard’s 4th District, which includes Simi Valley, Moorpark, Somis and the Santa Clara Valley, are eligible for the annual $500 award. Only one scholarship will be given each year.
Candidates must have volunteered their time at anything from tutoring other students to working with the Rancho Simi Recreation and Park District or agencies that provide services for the needy.
The Ventura County Community Foundation, a nonprofit organization, will be responsible for administering the scholarship fund and selecting the winner of the award.
Scholarship applications will be available beginning May 3 at Howard’s Simi Valley office located at 3855-F Alamo St. and the Community Foundation’s office at 1357 Del Norte Road in Camarillo. The deadline to turn in applications is May 27.
