Disappointing sales at a jewelry auction Sunday in Costa Mesa to benefit the Orange Coast Chorale may mean fewer musicians to accompany next season’s concerts, chorale officials said Monday. According to preliminary estimates, the auction fetched only between $700 and $1,000 instead of the $4,000 to $5,000 targeted. Music director Ted Reid said plans to add two smaller-scale concerts to next season’s schedule will not be jeopardized. Now, however, plans to hire a string quartet or other musicians to accompany the additional concerts may have to be scrapped, he said. Proceeds from the auction will be used to help pay for an orchestra for a May 18 production of Haydn’s “The Creation,” she said.
