Four people, including an infant, were killed and two others suffered major injuries Monday in a traffic collision north of Lancaster, authorities said.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which occurred shortly before 6 p.m. at 50th Street East and Avenue I, according to the California Highway Patrol. They were identified as a 30-year-old man, an 18-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy, CHP Sgt. Chuck Marek said.

The infant died at Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department said two other victims, both women, were in critical condition at the medical center. Their ages were not determined, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The accident occurred after a Cadillac traveling east on Avenue I swerved into the westbound lane to avoid a pickup truck that had crossed through the intersection at 50th Street East, the CHP said.

The driver of the Cadillac apparently lost control of the vehicle and began skidding sideways in the westbound lane, Marek said. The Cadillac was struck on the driver’s side by a Nissan traveling west on Avenue I, the sergeant said.

“It appears the Nissan driver didn’t have time to apply the brakes,” he said. “It was a pretty ferocious impact.”
