Auction Update: Robert Rauschenberg’s 1955 painting “Rebus” was sold to an anonymous bidder Tuesday night at Sotheby’s New York for $7.26 million. The price is a record for the artist and nearly $1 million more than the bankrupt seller, Swedish real estate investor Hans Thulin, paid for it three years ago. The “Rebus” sale was the high mark of a contemporary art auction that netted $21.26 million, about $2.4 million less than Sotheby’s lowest prediction. Records were set for 11 artists, but 20 of the 74 pieces offered failed to sell.
