Everett Chun beat 15 other students in the Southern California finals when he answered this question:

In 1754, colonial representatives gathered in New York to attend the Albany Plan of Union. The delegates met in response to the outbreak of hostilities in what war?

He correctly identified the French and Indian War.

The Los Angeles Times has funded the Citizen Bee competition in Southern California since 1988. Northern California holds its own competition and winners from both parts of the state attend the national finals, which are held from June 22 to 26 in Washington.

Nationally, more than 100,000 students in 3,500 schools participated in the Citizen Bee competitions this year. The competition tests student knowledge of American history, government, geography, economics, culture and current events.
