San Diego Fire Department officials are seeking the cause of a two-alarm blaze at a shooting range Wednesday that left four firefighters injured.

The fire at San Diego Indoor Range, 3443 India St., began about 8 p.m. and was brought under control about half an hour later, said Capt. Al Macdonald of the Fire Department. No one was in the building at the time.

Thick smoke and live ammunition in the building hampered the firefighting effort. Holes were cut in the roof of the windowless building to aid ventilation, and the San Diego Police Department bomb squad removed 2,500 to 3,000 rounds of ammunition, Macdonald said.

Fifty firefighters battled the blaze. Three suffered heat exhaustion and a fourth suffered smoke inhalation; all were taken to UC San Diego Medical Center for treatment.

Freeway ramps from Interstate 5 to India and Washington streets were closed for half an hour.

There was no estimate of damage late Wednesday.
