Local and state officials will hold a press conference Friday to announce groundbreaking on a long-awaited improvement project for Venice Boulevard, near the beach.

The $5.5-million project will include repaving and repairing the road, said Russell Snyder of the California Department of Transportation. Street parking places will be added, along with lighting and a bike path. Traffic signals, sewer and drainage systems will be improved.

The Grand Canal Bridge over Canal Street and South Venice Boulevard will be replaced, Snyder said. Construction starts later this month. There will be some lane closures, which will be announced later.
