2 Aztecs in WAC Men’s Tennis Final

The Western Athletic Conference singles tournament will have an all-San Diego State final, as Aztecs Ricardo Herrera and Joe McDonough will play in today’s 10 a.m. final at Santa Teresa, New Mexico.

Top-seeded Herrera defeated another SDSU player, Jeff Belloli, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarterfinals Friday morning. He went on to beat unseeded John Sanzari of New Mexico in the semis. Sanzari retired at 0-1 of the second set after he dropped the first set to Herrera, 6-3. Third-seeded McDonough also had to beat a teammate to get to the semifinals. He knocked off No. 6 Michael Sass, 6-1, 6-4, then eliminated Utah’s Ed Perogrino in the semis, 6-3, 6-4.

BASEBALL

Brian Holliday (4-2) pitched a three-hitter, struck out eight and walked four to lead SDSU to a 4-0 victory over No. 7 Hawaii (41-13, 17-4) in the second game of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader. Holliday outpitched freshman Scott Karl (8-4), a Carlsbad High graduate, who left in the sixth inning with the bases loaded and trailing 1-0. Then Steve Boucher hit a two-run single for SDSU (34-14, 10-5). Rick Page went two for three and scored twice.

Hawaii won the first game, 5-0, behind Bill Blanchette’s five-hitter, breaking a streak of 158 consecutive games in which SDSU had scored. The last time the Aztecs were shut out was March 15, 1989 against visiting Cal State Fullerton, 1-0. SDSU’s Derek Vinyard had two hits in the first game and one in the second to extend his hitting streak to 19 games.

Visiting University of San Francisco scored four runs in the top of the seventh to score an 8-7 West Coast Conference victory over University of San Diego. Tony Moeder had three hits for USD (20-30-2, 10-20) and Rick Doan had his sixth home run, a two-run shot. USF is 13-36, 8-22.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

SDSU advanced to the finals of the first WAC tournament with a 5-4 victory over host Utah in Salt Lake City. The Aztecs got singles victories from Dorey Brandt, at No. 1, and Susan Hawke and Tanya Lauer, at Nos. 5 and 6. The deciding match, however, was at No. 3 doubles, where Hawke and Shawn Egan defeated Julie Kemplin and Lisa Paal, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

SDSU will face top-seeded Brigham Young in the final today at 11 a.m.

SOFTBALL

Lisa Perettie (8-3) pitched a five-hitter, struck out five and walked two to lead SDSU to a 4-0 victory over Southern Utah State. Sue Campbell had two hits, an RBI and scored once for the Aztecs. She also had two hits and scored twice in the second game, a 6-2 SDSU victory. Barb Dotson went two for three and Christie Westerlund two for four with an RBI. Michelle Wesson (11-5) won the game with 5 1/3 innings of relief.

University of San Diego improved to 33-13 by splitting a doubleheader with Whittier at USD. Pitcher Tiffany Wasilewski from Mission Bay High improved to 20-4 and Melissa Reinard homered as the Toreras won the opener, 3-2. A 9-7 loss in the second game snapped a seven-game winning streak for USD, which has won 19 of 21 games within the past three weeks.
