Driver Dies After Truck Plunges 60 Feet

A water truck driver died Sunday when his vehicle plunged about 60 feet off a transition road between the Antelope Valley and Golden State freeways near Sylmar, authorities said.

California Highway Patrol officers discovered the wreckage on a vacant patch of land below the elevated transition road that connects the southbound lanes of the two freeways about 6:35 a.m., Officer Joseph Pickar said.

The driver, whose name was not released pending notification of relatives, was dead when officers found him. Pickar said the accident may have occurred several hours earlier, but was not noticed because no one else was involved and darkness hid the wreckage.

Pickar said the man was driving south on the transition road when his vehicle apparently struck the concrete guard rail and went over the side.
