Cal State Northridge’s “Sunday game” bugaboo bit the Matador baseball team once again over the weekend.

Northridge, which has won just two of 10 Sunday games this season, had its 13-game home win streak snapped as it dropped a 4-2 decision to Sacramento on Sunday at Matador Field.

Craig Clayton (11-4), who had won nine of his last 10 pitching decisions, went the distance for Northridge (37-15-1), allowing 11 hits.

Clayton replaced Dan Penner as CSUN’s single-season strikeout leader when he fanned Eric Vorbeck in the second inning. Clayton, who has 129 strikeouts this season, struck out three and walked three.

Scott Corliss (6-0), who had a string of 23 1/3 scoreless innings earlier this year, limited Northridge to six hits and struck out five as Sacramento (36-21-1) salvaged the finale of the three-game series.

Northridge loaded the bases in the ninth without benefit of a hit, and Trevor Rodgers came on to get the final out and record his third save.

Northridge led 1-0 in the second inning when Denny Vigo doubled to score Greg Shockey, who also doubled. Vigo advanced on a ground out and scored on Mike Solar’s ground out to put CSUN ahead, 2-0.

Dave Kushan’s sacrifice fly in the sixth brought home Rafael Maldonado to cut Northridge’s lead in half, and back-to-back doubles by John Quintell and Shawn Blankenship tied the game, 2-2, in the seventh.

An eighth-inning sacrifice fly by Vorbeck put Sacramento up, 3-2, and Ron Robart followed with an RBI single to give the Hornets a 4-2 lead.
