Melvin Best; Industrial Designer, Educator

Melvin H. M. Best, head of his own industrial design firm, a former professor of design at USC and head of the Industrial Design program at UCLA, died Friday in Topanga of cancer.
He was 67.
Best was a founding member in 1965 of the Industrial Designers Society of America. Among his innovations were the Silhouette luggage line for Samsonite and the Rainbird sprinkler. He held more than 35 patents and won dozens of major design awards.
