A car which was hit by another auto careened into a group of pedestrians Tuesday night, injuring four people, including a woman whose foot was amputated at the scene, police said.

The accident occurred just after 6 p.m. on Katella Avenue near Norfolk Lane, Police Lt. Marc Hedgpeth said. A car traveling west on Katella collided with a stopped vehicle, sending it out of control across the street and onto a sidewalk.

Four pedestrians were struck, including one woman who was apparently pinned between the car and a wall, Hedgpeth said. The woman’s foot had to be amputated at the scene before she was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where she was reported in critical condition Tuesday night, also with chest injuries.

The conditions of the other three pedestrians--one at UCI Medical Center and the other two at Western Medical Center-Anaheim--were not immediately available.

Hedgpeth said it was not clear what caused the motorist to collide with the stopped car or how fast the driver was going.

The occupants of the two cars were apparently not injured.
