Top-ranked Stefan Edberg coasted past Alexander Mronz of Germany, 6-3, 6-1, Tuesday in the second round of the German Open at Hamburg.

In other matches, Yannick Noah of France beat Richard Fromberg of Australia, 7-6 (8-6), 6-0; Franco Davin of Argentina upset 11th-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador, 6-4, 6-3; Goran Prpic of Yugoslavia knocked off 12th-seeded Andrei Chesnokov of the Soviet Union, 6-4, 6-3, and No. 10 Andrei Cherkasov of the Soviet Union ousted Henri Leconte of France, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

Top-seeded Michael Chang beat hard-serving Niclas Kroon of Sweden, 6-0, 7-5, in his first match at the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships at Charlotte, N.C. His second-round opponent on Thursday will be unseeded Brian Shelton, a winner Monday over Stafano Pescosolido of Italy.

Karine Quentrec of France ousted 11th-seeded Sandra Cecchini of Italy, 6-4, 7-5, in the conclusion of a suspended match in the Italian Open at Rome.

In other matches, second-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina defeated Amanda Coetzer of South Africa, 6-2, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez beat Lorenza Jachia of Italy, 7-5, 6-3.
