PLATFORM : Taxing Culture

The first thing I thought (was) I’m going to have to pay for the mistakes of Los Angeles politicians over the last few years. In a city where there is such a diverse economy, with all the people that are pouring in here, and all the money coming in, that politicians could get in a situation where their budget deficit is so bad that they have to charge 10% on entertainment is ridiculous.

The whole thing goes back to the ‘80s where everybody was spending and borrowing without any regard for the consequences. Now the people who go out and spend money in Los Angeles, which is supposedly what city government would want to encourage, are going to get socked. So maybe people will go to fewer events. The guy who doesn’t have a lot of money might just rent a video now. It might end up hurting the economy here, which is tied into entertainment.

And all the time they’re touting L.A. as a cultural mecca.
