SOFTBALL
San Diego State, which finished in a second-place tie in the Western Athletic Conference, drew a first-round bye and will face either New Mexico (33-17, 7-3) or Southern Utah State (5-24, 0-10) in today’s second round of the double-elimination WAC Tournament in Omaha, Neb. The Aztecs (26-18-1, 7-3) finished tied with the Lobos during the regular season but swept them, 1-0 and 5-4, in a doubleheader to earn the No. 2 seeding in the tournament. Utah (22-10, 8-2) is the top-seeded team.
UC San Diego (21-20) is the No. 2 seed in the three-team NCAA Division III West Regional. The Tritons will face third-seeded Simpson (Iowa) College (21-10) Friday in Pella, Iowa. The loser of the UCSD-Simpson game will play No. 1 Central (36-6) of Pella. The tournament will go to a double-elimination championship format Saturday. The Tritons are ranked 14th in Division III. Central is ranked second.
