COMMENCEMENT 1991 : University of Southern California

The University of Southern California conferred degrees on 7,145 graduates Thursday at the school’s Alumni Memorial Park. New USC President Steven B. Sample, who was installed March 31, presided. The school awarded 1,631 bachelor of arts and 2,027 bachelor of science degrees; 1,411 students were given a master’s of arts degrees and 1,206 received master’s of science degrees; 361 received doctor of philosophy degrees and 509 were awarded professional doctorates. Peter V. Ueberroth (San Jose State, 1959), former baseball commissioner and 1984 Olympic Organizing Committee president delivered the keynote address.

The school conferred honorary degrees on Ueberroth; Augustus F. (Gus) Hawkins, a retired member of the U.S. House of Representatives (D-Los Angeles); Dorothy Leavey, philanthropist, and Carver Andress Mead, a professor of computer science at Caltech. Kenneth Thomas Kiger of Prescott, Ariz., an aerospace engineering major, was the class valedictorian.
