San Diego State University President Thomas Day has told campus employees in a letter that 563 nontenured classroom lecturers will not be back on campus next fall.
The action came as part of a $19.8-million--or 10% overall--cut in university operations as a result of the massive $13-billion estimated state deficit.
The university will lay off 31 retired professors who still teach one or two courses a year under an early retirement program. In addition, two faculty counselors, 19 nonteaching employees, and 163 of 231 nontenured lecturers who serve under two-year contracts because of their longevity on campus will lose their jobs.
SDSU will also deny reappointment to 400 of 621 temporary lecturers, who traditionally have been hired on a year-to-year basis, Day said.
The cuts will mean a loss of at least 500 classes beginning next fall.
Day said the campus is looking to try voluntary programs that could help reduce the number of people being laid off.
