Controversy Over Lomax

Share

On May 7, we were traveling on Overland Boulevard at 6:15 p.m. and stopped at the traffic signal on the corner of Venice Boulevard, two cars from the intersection.

We saw two police vehicles stop and motion to a driver in the left-hand lane. The driver exited from his vehicle and the police handcuffed the man. After he was handcuffed they began to beat this man with total impunity in broad daylight at a busy city intersection. Several times they hit and kicked this handcuffed man after his face was flush to the concrete.

We had no video camera; we felt powerless to curb police brutality in our city.

We are writing this letter in order to act as “witnesses” to the acts of our policemen upon another handcuffed man. I read that Dan Garcia resigned from the Police Commission; maybe the entire Police Commission and Gates should resign.

Sometimes in life all we can do is act as witnesses, until enough of us join together. This unacceptable violent conduct can no longer be tolerated.
