VENTURA : Contract OKd for Pier Businesses

Share

The Ventura City Council has agreed to give the Janss Corp. rights to build and operate a new restaurant and shops at the Ventura Pier as part of the renovation of the 119-year-old structure.

The council voted 7 to 0 Monday to approve the development agreement with the Santa Monica-based firm, which must submit plans for the project by July 1.

Janss would build approximately 15,000 square feet of shops and a restaurant on the base of the pier and land abutting it on the west, and would operate the businesses while paying rent to the city, said Barbara Harison, city director of parks and recreation.

The company also agreed to rebuild the existing Pier Fish House and to make all its work comply with architectural designs drafted by the city, she said.

Corporation President William Janss Jr. could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Architects are preparing drawings for the $3.5-million renovation of the pier itself, which is scheduled to begin this fall.
