Harold Baines can’t explain his success against Baltimore. Obviously, the Orioles don’t have a clue.

Baines hit a three-run home run in the first inning and added two singles Thursday night, leading the Oakland Athletics to an 11-5 victory at Baltimore.

“It just happens that I do well against the Orioles,” Baines said. “I got them this time, but who’s to say they won’t get me next time? I still have six games against them.”

Baines is 11 for 16 with 11 runs batted in against the Orioles this season, and four of his five home runs have come against Baltimore. He hit three home runs in a game against the Orioles at Oakland.

Dave Henderson hit his 10th homer for Oakland.

Joe Klink (2-2) pitched two innings of one-hit ball in relief of A’s rookie Kirk Dressendorfer, who left with stiffness in his right arm after four innings.

Seattle 3, Cleveland 1--Tracy Jones and Pete O’Brien hit run-scoring doubles with two out in the ninth inning to lift the Mariners over the Indians at Cleveland for their fourth consecutive victory.

Seattle has won 10 of 11 games; the Indians have lost eight of nine and are 2-11 at home.

Cleveland’s Greg Swindell (1-5) gave up three runs and eight hits in 8 2/3 innings. Swindell has a 2.61 earned-run average, but the Indians have scored two runs or fewer in six of his eight starts.

Seattle’s Mike Jackson (4-2) pitched 2 2/3 scoreless innings and has not been scored upon in his last five games, a span of 10 innings.

Milwaukee 6, Minnesota 3--Robin Yount and Dante Bichette hit home runs, and Bill Wegman got his first victory of the season as the Brewers beat the Twins at Minneapolis.

Wegman, who missed much of last season and all of April with injuries, went five innings for his first victory since beating Oakland, 5-0, on May 18, 1990. He gave up five hits, struck out two and walked one.

Bichette’s homer off Alan Anderson (1-3) broke a 2-2 tie in the second. Yount singled home Greg Vaughn, who tripled, in the third to make it 4-2.

Pittsburgh 6, Houston 4--Doug Drabek survived a four-run first inning by the Astros and had a key hit as the Pirates rallied to get their first three-game sweep at Houston since 1981.

Barry Bonds’ RBI double broke a 4-4 tie in the seventh to help the Pirates hand the Astros their fourth consecutive defeat. Bonds stole third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mike LaValliere.

Drabek (2-6) gave up 11 hits in six innings to break a three-game losing streak and doubled to start a three-run fifth that tied the score.

San Francisco 5, Montreal 4--Francisco Olivares got Tim Wallach to hit into a game-ending double play at San Francisco.
