BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Joyner Still Angry About Being Hit

Share

Wally Joyner’s anger over being hit by a Steve Farr pitch lasted longer than the sting of the ball.

Joyner wasn’t hurt by the fastball that hit him in the ribs in the eighth inning of the Angels’ 7-0 rout of the Yankees Thursday in New York. Lance Parrish, whose uniform was grazed by Eric Plunk, and Dave Parker, who had a puffy right knee after taking a Steve Howe fastball on the outside of the knee, were also fine.

However, Joyner was still upset Friday. “What steamed me is it was so obvious and nothing was done by the officials,” said Joyner, who refrained from commenting Thursday for fear he’d say something he’d regret. “I’d better not talk about it anymore.”

Joyner was one for three with a sacrifice fly, reducing his major league-leading batting average a point to .379. . . . Second baseman Luis Sojo (strained right hamstring) and center fielder Junior Felix (strained right calf) sat out Friday to avoid risking further injury on the rain-dampened field. Sojo said he wouldn’t play until Monday, but trainer Ned Bergert said Sojo was available. Felix, who injured his leg on the first game of the trip, said he’s occasionally in pain, but Bergert said that’s normal for such an injury. . . . Max Venable made his first start of the season in center field after making four in right and one in left.
