TRACK AND FIELD : UCLA’s Dumble Wins Pacific 10 Shotput Title

UCLA freshman shotputter Dawn Dumble proved Saturday that she can compete with more experienced collegians.

On her third attempt, the 1990 Bakersfield High graduate got off a throw of 56 feet 7 1/2 inches to set an American junior (19 and under) record and a Pacific 10 Conference record during the first day of the Pac-10 track and field finals at Tempe, Ariz.

UCLA placed four women shotputters among the top six finishers Saturday, giving the Bruins 23 more points toward a possible fifth consecutive Pac-10 team title.

Bruin sprinters Janeene Vickers (13.56 seconds wind-aided) and Tonya Sedwick (13.81 legal) are the top two qualifiers in the 100 hurdles.

Sedwick, who earlier in the week won the heptathlon title, won the long jump with a leap of 21-3 1/4

After six events, Oregon leads with 57 points. UCLA is second at 43. USC is seventh with 10 points.

In men’s finals, UCLA’s Eric Bergreen, the defending NCAA indoor shotput champion, won the conference title with a mark of 61-7 1/2. He placed second in the hammer with a throw of 204-6.

After seven events, Oregon leads with 53 points. UCLA is second with 39. USC has 3.
