BASEBALL: DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Bailes on Bobby Brown’s Mailing List

Share

American League President Dr. Bobby Brown sent a letter to Angel reliever Scott Bailes, who was ejected from Tuesday’s game at New York for hitting Yankee Randy Velarde with a pitch. Contents of the letter--sent to Anaheim Stadium--are unknown, but apparently it contains a reprimand rather than a fine.

AL spokeswoman Phyllis Merhige said the matter had been dealt with but would not discuss the outcome. However, she said the league announces suspensions or sizable fines when those are assessed.

Dave Parker faces an automatic $100 fine for throwing his bat after striking out in the ninth inning Saturday night. He was also ejected after a verbal exchange with home plate umpire Larry Young.

“I just said the second strike stayed inside,” Parker said. “I threw my bat, and he said, ‘That’s a fine.’ I said, ‘You want a fine?’ Then I said, Well, I can’t tell you what I said then. It’s the first time I’ve snapped since I’ve been in this bad slump. They should consider themselves pretty lucky.”

Parker was two for three, his first multihit game since he had two hits against Cleveland on April 30. He has yet to have a three-hit game.

The Angels have a 6-3 record on this trip with one game left today. . . . Bryan Harvey issued a leadoff walk to pinch-hitter Brady Anderson in the ninth but kept the bullpen’s record intact at 11 saves in 11 opportunities. . . . Wally Joyner (.391 average, six homers and 31 RBIs) is indisputably hot, but Rod Carew was hitting .444 after 36 games in 1983. However, Carew had only two homers and 24 RBIs.
