Cal State Los Angeles has been awarded $800,000 by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to support the school’s program to attract students to careers in scientific research and teaching.

The grant, announced Monday, will be used to improve undergraduate biology courses, recruit students in secondary schools, start a research program for women students and hire new faculty.

“Students will benefit by improved classroom instruction, increased student support programs and by increased opportunities for research training,” said Alan Muchlinski, director of the school’s Undergraduate Biological Sciences Education Initiative. The award was one of 44, totaling $31.5 million, given by Howard Hughes Medical Institute to colleges and universities this year, officials said.
