Hearing on Ideas for Hospital Site

Share

A public hearing to solicit ideas on how to use an abandoned hospital site in Hermosa Beach will be held June 6 by the South Bay Hospital District.

The district purchased the former St. Michael’s Hospital on Pacific Coast Highway in 1983 for $2.8 million. Despite several proposals for use of the property, it has remained vacant and become dilapidated.

Philip Valera, district executive director, said the district wants residents to express their views on what should be done with the 1.7-acre site. Among the ideas recently discussed with the district is a plan to put senior-citizen housing there.

The St. Michael’s facility came under the control of American Medical International in 1984 when it leased South Bay Hospital from the district for 30 years. AMI, at different times, considered using it for a chemical dependency treatment unit, a skilled-nursing facility or a senior citizen residence. AMI has asked the district to sell the property and use the proceeds to upgrade South Bay Hospital.

The hearing will be held at 7 p.m. at district offices, 2615 Pacific Coast Highway, Suite 120, Hermosa Beach. Since leasing the hospital, the district has functioned as a foundation, providing money for public health programs in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach.
