OXNARD : School Board to Ban All Smoking by ’96
The board of the Oxnard Union High School District voted Wednesday to shut faculty smoking rooms by 1996 to keep federal and state funding for drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention programs.
The district expects to receive $103,872 to $118,737 from the Drug Alcohol Tobacco Education program for the 1991-92 school year. But to get the money, it must certify that all schools will be free of tobacco by July, 1996, according to a staff report to the board.
The policy prohibits the use of tobacco products anywhere on district property and in district vehicles.
Schools in the district already keep students from smoking on campus. The DATE requirement extends the ban to teachers, administrators and the public who use district facilities for such activities as football games and bingo.
The district had to agree by May 31--the deadline for applications to the county coordinator of the program--to establish the no-smoking policy or it would not receive DATE funds for the 1991-92 school year.
