TENNIS ROUNDUP : No Bologna: Two Upsets, and Muster Struggles

Sixth-seeded Javier Sanchez and seventh-seeded Marian Vajda lost Wednesday in the second round of the ATP tournament at Bologna, Italy.

Sanchez lost to Paolo Cane, an Italian Davis Cup player who has had recurrent back problems this year, 6-3, 7-5. Vajda fell to unseeded Jaime Oncins of Brazil, 6-2, 6-2.

Third-seeded Austrian Tomas Muster struggled three sets against Japan’s Shuzo Matsuoka. Muster won a first-set tiebreaker, 8-6, lost the second set and took the third for a 7-6, 1-6, 6-3 victory.

In the quarterfinals, Muster takes on Cane and Oncins will play Jeff Tarango, who defeated Nuno Marques of Portugal.

Tarango, who upset top-seeded countryman Derrick Rostagno, lost the first set before going on to a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory.

Stefan Edberg and Magnus Gustafsson carried Sweden to a 3-0 victory over Spain, virtually assuring the Swedes of a berth in the finals of the World Team Cup tournament in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Gustafsson defeated Juan Aguilera, 6-3, 6-3, and Edberg beat Emilio Sanchez, 6-4, 6-4. Edberg and Gustafsson teamed to defeat Sanchez and Sergio Casal, 7-5, 6-1, in doubles.

Also in the Red Group, the Soviet Union’s Andrei Cherkasov and Alexander Volkov both won their singles matches over Argentina. Cherkasov battled to a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Horacio del la Pena, and Volkov defeated Franco Davin, 6-0, 6-2.

But the Argentines came back in the doubles to take one point, with de la Pena and Javier Frana beating Cherkasov and Volkov, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

As a result, Sweden has to win only one match against the Soviets on Friday to reach Sunday’s finals.

The Blue Group, including the United States, resumes play today.

Second-seeded Lori McNeil won her second-round match at the Strasbourg Open in France, beating fellow American Ann Grossman, 6-2, 6-3.

McNeil’s quarterfinal opponent will be Australian Anne Minter, who beat France’s Karine Quentrec, 6-2, 6-2.

Also in the second round, Rachel McQuillan of Australia routed Paula Langrova of Czechoslovakia, 6-1, 6-1, and fourth-seeded Laura Gildemeister of Peru defeated the Soviet Union’s Elena Brioukhovets, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

Top-seeded Conchita Martinez of Spain overwhelmed Linda Ferrando of Italy, 6-0, 6-2, in the second round of the European Open at Geneva, Switzerland.

Christel Fauche of Switzerland also advanced to the quarterfinals when she defeated Sabine Hack of Germany, 6-2, 7-5.
