Undrafted All-Pro Team

The following undrafted football players of recent years--none of whom could meet the scouts’ rigid standards for speed, size, strength and/or other measurables at the end of their college careers--became NFL starters shortly before the league adopted its present 80-man summer roster limit, which would have ruled many of them out: OFFENSE

Notes: Warren Moon, coming off an MVP performance in the Rose Bowl, opted for Canada in 1978 before the Raiders--and 27 other clubs--passed him over in the NFL draft. It was the kind of mistake that Al Davis was determined to avoid 14 years later when he plucked another Canadian designate, Raghib Ismail. . . . Three of the above were drafted out of the United States Football League: Gary Clark, Vaughan Johnson and Frank Minnifield. . . . There are six undrafted starters in the Seattle lineup: Joe Nash, Rufus Porter, Eugene Robinson, Jeff Chadwick, Darrick Brilz and quarterback David Krieg. . . . A computer-science Colgate graduate, Robinson, who has played every game for the Seahawks since they picked him up as a free agent six years ago, has been called the most underrated player in football today. Raise your hand if you have heard of him. . . . According to Chadwick, more football fans have heard of Grand Valley State than Jeff Criswell’s school, Graceland, the alma mater of Bruce Jenner and Merle Harmon. . . . Because college ballcarriers are the simplest NFL candidates to scout accurately, there are fewer free agents at running back than at any other pro football position. . . . In the most recent Super Bowl, Kent Hull and Maurice Carthon were on opposing sides. . . . Deron Cherry keys the Kansas City secondary, which is often called the NFL’s finest.
