Police were searching for two unidentified men who savagely attacked a Santa Ana man early Friday morning, stabbing him more than 20 times during a heated argument on a sidewalk.

Jerry Louis Jones, 38, of Santa Ana, was listed in critical condition Friday at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana after the 1:30 a.m. attack, Santa Ana Police Lt. Bob Helton said.

“It appears he is going to live,” said Santa Ana police spokeswoman Maureen Haacker, who added that the attack did not appear to be related to gangs.

Details were sketchy because there were no witnesses to the argument, and detectives were unable to interview Jones, Helton said.

Jones was apparently standing in front of the Vagabond Inn in the 1500 block of East 1st Street when the argument broke out, said Helton, who added that police do not know whether Jones knew his attackers.

At some point in the argument, one or both of the assailants pulled out a knife and began stabbing Jones repeatedly. They then ran away, Helton said.
