Scott Lewis, struggling as the fifth starter with a 1-5 record and a 6.27 earned-run average, will miss his next turn because the Angels have an off-day Monday, but he is tentatively scheduled to get another chance next Saturday in Toronto. “Maybe it’s what I need,” he said. “All the stuff that’s been going on, I can’t figure it out. The harder I try, the worse it gets. It’s been eating me up. . . . I’m going to go back to what got me here--three pitches and a ‘show-me’ curveball. I think I neglected the rest of my game because I was working on the curveball so much.” . . . Fernando Valenzuela, projected as the fifth starter, threw in the Anaheim Stadium bullpen Saturday. “He threw four good pitches--a cutter, fastball, screwball and curve--and he had them all,” Manager Doug Rader said. Valenzuela will make his second minor league start Monday, for double-A Midland at Jackson, Miss. Angel President Rich Brown will be there to watch Valenzuela and some of the club’s prospects.

Club officials are mulling altering the uniform design and colors. “It wouldn’t be a radical change,” Brown said. “It’s something we think about every three or four years.” A combination of black--instead of blue--and red is being considered.

Catcher Lance Parrish got an extra day’s rest for his left shoulder, which was sore earlier this week. Rader also said he wanted to avoid using Parrish in a night game Saturday and a day game today. . . . Jack Howell, on the disabled list because of a sprained right wrist, sustained a bruise in his right rib cage when he was hit by a pitch during a simulated game. A date for his activation hasn’t been determined.
