BASEBALL : DAILY REPORT : DODGERS : Hershiser’s Return May Be Wednesday

In passing what may be his final test before joining the Dodgers next week, Orel Hershiser said his shoulder felt “great” Saturday, one day after he threw 92 pitches in his fourth minor-league rehabilitation start.

Although Hershiser said he has not yet made a decision, many expect the Dodgers to announce he will pitch for them Wednesday night at Dodger Stadium against Houston.

That will mark the end of a 13-month rehabilitation caused by reconstructive shoulder surgery.

Hershiser said he will work out at Dodger Stadium again today for a final check of the shoulder, and then he and therapist Pat Screnar will meet with Fred Claire, Dodger vice president. An announcement could follow.

Hershiser allowed 11 hits in seven innings for San Antonio, but was not bothered by his only sub-par performance during rehabilitation. “I got my work in, that was the main thing, so I have no complaints,” Hershiser said.

Jose Gonzalez went hitless in two at-bats Saturday, making him 0 for 17 for the season. He has more at-bats without a hit than any other major league player who began the season on a 25-man roster. Teammate Barry Lyons is 0 for 9, who probably will be sent to the minor leagues when Hershiser is activated. . . . Both injured Dodgers were hurt on the same play in the first inning Saturday. With one out, Darryl Strawberry fouled a ball off his right foot while Juan Samuel was attempting to steal second base. The ball injured Strawberry’s toe, and the slide into second base aggravated Samuel’s ankle. Strawberry said that doctors drained fluid from his swollen toe and told him he was “doubtful” for today. Dodger trainers said Samuel should be fine soon. . . . While Alfredo Griffin collected a triple and a run-batted-in in his return to the lineup, Dodger coaches were shaking their heads at his fielding, which included two grounders under his glove for singles. Although Jose Offerman is still with the Dodgers, Griffin will be the starter unless he keeps struggling. . . . Announcer Vin Scully missed Friday’s televised game to attend daughter Erin’s graduation from the University of California.
