COUNTYWIDE : Holiday Weekend Has Fewer Accidents

The California Highway Patrol reported that the number of traffic accidents over Memorial Day weekend dropped this year, but the number of drunken driving arrests rose slightly.

There were 26 traffic accidents over Memorial Day weekend, which began 6 p.m. Friday and ended midnight Monday, the Ventura County office of the patrol reported.

Thirteen of the accidents involved injuries to 20 people, but no one was killed, a CHP spokeswoman said. In four of the 26 accidents, drivers were suspected of being drunk, she said.

Forty-three people were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving, she said.

During the same period last year, the CHP reported 33 traffic accidents.

Twenty-four people were injured in 19 of the 33 accidents.

Six of the accidents involved drunk drivers, authorities said. Thirty-six people were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
